About Simon House Recovery Centre
Since 1984, Simon House Recovery Centre guides and empowers individuals to achieve long-term recovery from addiction and all its effects.
Through our Mission, to support those affected by addiction to discover who they can BE, where they BELONG, and what they can ultimately BECOME; our Vision, a place where anyone impacted by addiction can heal, grow, and reintegrate into their communities as healthy individuals; and Core Values of compassion, acceptance, collaboration integrity, humility, and innovation; we are leading the way in addiction treatment and lifelong recovery.
Simon House provides a unique approach to recovery and our commitment is to save and transform the lives of those battling addiction. By utilizing innovative program tools, our clients navigate the recovery process in a meaningful way. With a capacity of 67 male participants at any given time, our 84-day residential program is delivered in a supportive, uplifting, and positive peer environment, providing clients the ultimate set-up for long-term success in recovery. Once participants graduate from Simon House, our Aftercare program offers community connections, brotherhood, fellowship, and alumni support.
Simon House also offers New Leaf Holistic Recovery, a co-ed, 12-week intensive day treatment program delivered offsite. At Simon House, members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community have access to Stonewall Recovery, a unique support program to meet their needs. The holistic nature of New Leaf and Stonewall promotes wellness and balance in the many areas of life as a foundation for change, growth, and recovery.
Simon House provides cultural and spiritual support to all program participants. We have a First Nations Case Worker on staff to ensure traditions are respected and practiced.
Substance abuse and addiction have significant consequences for society, with the potential to impact crime rates, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, hospitalization, mental illness, homelessness, incarceration, and death.
Since Simon House core program is partially funded by the provincial government, there is no charge for clients with an Alberta Health Care card.
Simon House is fully accredited with Accreditation Canada. In 2023 and 2024, we were recognized as one of the Top Five Impact Calgary Charities through Charity Intelligence.
Funding Needs
We are seeking funding for the following important programs to enhance the services that we provide to our clients.
Aftercare: Designed to support the continued recovery of individuals who have graduated from our residential treatment program. Aftercare offers counselling, support, and social activities to address essential components of a successful recovery. The program utilizes the latest in addiction research and knowledge for all individuals affected by addiction. The program involves experienced staff as well as alumni members who provide guidance and support to recent graduates. Aftercare is not funded by the government.
First Nations Program: Nearly 25% of Simon House clients identify themselves as First Nations and this percentage is increasing. We have a First Nations Case Worker on staff to ensure Indigenous traditions are respected and practiced. The program, not funded by the government, relies on community support. All residents partake in spiritual care including education on Indigenous culture and history. This fosters better understanding, eliminate stereotypes, and supports unity and friendship. We offer clients the option to participate in Sweats, daily smudge, meditation, Wellbriety, Sharing Circles, traditional medicine gathering teachings, Indigenous arts and crafts.
New Leaf Holistic Recovery: Introduced in April 2024, this is a co-ed, 12-week intensive day treatment program currently delivered at Wild Rose United Church. The program is delivered in cohorts with a maximum of 12 participants each. Thanks to the grant from Calgary Foundation, we secured a substantial portion of the funding to continue delivering New Leaf on year two. We are seeking community funding to continue delivering this program on years to come. New Leaf is funded by community donors only.
Family Care: Every father who walks through our doors carries the weight of his own struggles and the unspoken burden of his children. By guiding these men toward recovery, we are also giving their children a chance to grow up with a father who is present, loving, and engaged. With our current resources, we are guiding individuals to restoring family relationships, one father at a time, ensuring that the impact of addiction is not passed to the next generation. The ripple effect of healing extends far beyond the individual. At Simon House, every success story represents a family made whole again, breaking free from the cycles of addiction, pain and loss.
With sustainable funding for this program, we will be able to provide professional therapy, group sessions, and family involvement, in which participants will develop essential communication skills, emotional regulation techniques, and strategies for building healthy relationship dynamics. These enhanced communication skills will empower clients to express their feelings effectively, fostering clearer and more meaningful interactions. The Family Care program will also include activities and discussions designed to strengthen understanding and connection between clients and their families. By helping clients identify and manage their emotions, we aim to promote healthier, more supportive relationships with their loved ones.
