Michael Gretton was born and raised in Calgary.


Michael is the Executive Director of the Southern Alberta Heritage Language Association (SAHLA), a non-profit organization that promotes and teaches international/heritage languages for local students from kindergarten to grade 12, as well as adults. Michael has worked for SAHLA for over 35 years. In addition to his professional work in international languages education, Michael is passionate about multiculturalism, anti-racism, peace education, poverty reduction and building community and social cohesion in his work and volunteering activities.

Michael has served as a volunteer board member with GlobalFest (President), International Avenue Arts and Culture Community, and Vibrant Communities Calgary.

Michael has also served as volunteer team leader with Results Canada Calgary chapter, and as a youth mentor (matched with indigenous youth) with Big Brothers Big Sisters Calgary.
